Donald Trump once again broke with traditional protocols of the U.S. presidency. The president celebrated his 80th birthday this Sunday with an unprecedented event: a UFC mixed martial arts event held on the White House lawn, a scene that drew applause from his supporters and sharp criticism from his detractors.
The presidential residence, accustomed to official ceremonies, diplomatic receptions, and concerts, was transformed for one night into a massive combat arena. In front of thousands of guests, a professional octagon was set up in the South Lawn of the White House, where some of the UFC’s top fighters headlined an evening marked by punches, knockouts, and a production spectacle never before seen at the seat of American power.

The celebration coincided with the president’s birthday and was presented as part of the events leading up to the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence.
However, the decision to hold a combat event in such an iconic venue sparked intense political and social debate.
A temporary structure with a capacity for more than 4,000 attendees was built for the occasion.
Amid a massive display of lights and screens, Trump watched the fights alongside First Lady Melania Trump, while special guests, business leaders, politicians, and celebrities enjoyed the show.

One of the most talked-about moments of the night was the defeat of the Georgian-Spanish fighter Ilia Topuria at the hands of the American Justin Gaethje in the main event.
The images of the wrestlers touring some of the White House’s most iconic rooms also generated a huge buzz on social media.
Behind the event was Dana White, president of the UFC and a close friend of Trump’s for decades.
Their relationship dates back to the days when Trump organized fights at his casinos and has grown stronger over time.
A lot of criticism

While the president’s supporters hailed the initiative as a sign of his connection with millions of combat sports fans, critics accused the White House of being used to promote a private event for commercial gain.
Several organizations questioned the use of public funds for an event of this nature and pointed out potential conflicts of interest due to the Trump family’s ties to companies associated with the UFC.
Although there were legal attempts to stop the performance, the courts allowed the event to go ahead.
Controversy aside, the image of the White House transformed into a battleground will go down as one of the most striking and controversial episodes of Donald Trump’s presidency, as he once again managed to capture the world’s attention.
