The Ecuadorian national team suffered one of its most painful defeats in recent years, losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast in its 2026 World Cup debut. Just when it looked like the match in Philadelphia was headed for a scoreless draw, a goal by Amad Diallo in the 90th minute silenced thousands of Ecuadorian fans and ended an impressive 19-game unbeaten streak.
La Tri entered the tournament with high expectations after nearly two years of positive results. However, the World Cup opener left a bitter taste for Sebastián Beccacece’s team, which saw a valuable point slip away in the final moments of an intense and hard-fought match.

From the start, Ecuador displayed an unusual offensive approach.
Beccacece opted for a more aggressive formation in an effort to address one of the main criticisms his team had faced in recent months: a lack of goals.
The first big chance came in the 11th minute, courtesy of Enner Valencia.
The legendary Ecuadorian striker came close to becoming the first player from his country to score in three different World Cups, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.
La Tri kept pressing and came very close to opening the scoring.
First, it was John Yeboah who hit the post in the 23rd minute. Later, Alan Minda rattled the Ivory Coast goal again with another shot that crashed off the crossbar.
The African team at its best
Ivory Coast kicked off the World Cup with a resounding victory. After a much more aggressive second half, they secured a 1-0 win in the final minute thanks to a stunning goal by Amad Diallo. But Ivory Coast also posed a constant threat.
Winger Yan Diomande was a constant threat down the right flank and kept the Ecuadorian defense on their toes for much of the match.
After halftime, the African team stepped up the intensity and began to assert their physical dominance.
Elye Wahi also hit the crossbar in one of the Ivorians’ best scoring chances, while Ecuador tried to hold on and capitalize on spaces on the counterattack.
As the minutes ticked by, both coaches made substitutions in an effort to secure the win.
The decision that ultimately turned the game around was the substitution of Manchester United star Amad Diallo, who had started the match on the bench.
Just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, Wilfried Singo made a deep run down the right flank and sent a precise cross into the box.
Diallo found himself unmarked and finished with finesse past Hernán Galíndez to seal the 1-0 victory.
The goal came as a devastating blow to Ecuador and its fans.
In addition to complicating their chances in Group E, the loss ended an unbeaten streak that had lasted since September 2024.
Now, the Ecuadorian national team must step up in its next match against Curaçao if it wants to stay in contention to advance to the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
