Japan once again proved that it should never be written off. With tenacity, discipline, and a tremendous ability to bounce back, the Blue Samurai salvaged a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their Group F World Cup opener, in a match that seemed to be under control by Ronald Koeman’s team but ultimately slipped away in the final minutes.

The match, played in Arlington, Texas, had two very different halves. The first half was tight, slow-paced, and lacking in excitement. The Netherlands had more possession, but failed to turn that dominance into clear scoring chances. Japan, for its part, seemed more concerned with maintaining defensive discipline than with mounting a sustained attack.

Japan Draws with Netherlands

The Dutch team tried to find openings with Frenkie de Jong anchoring the midfield, but the Japanese defense effectively shut down the paths to Zion Suzuki’s goal.

Only a few runs by Cody Gakpo and a couple of attempts by Donyel Malen troubled the Asian side during the first 45 minutes.

Japan didn’t create much in attack either.

Take Kubo saw little action, and Nakamura and Ueda’s attempts were not enough to break the deadlock.

Everything seemed to be heading toward a tight game until, in the second half, the match took a complete turn.

Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring for the Netherlands with a precise header off a set piece.

The Dutch captain once again demonstrated his aerial prowess and put the European team ahead.

The goal forced Japan to push forward, and the game opened up.

The Blue Samurai fought back with determination and tied the game thanks to Kieto Nakamura, who caught goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen off guard with a well-placed shot.

The Japanese are celebrating it as a victory

The Netherlands responded quickly.

Crysencio Summerville scored a great goal with a left-footed shot across the goal, restoring Koeman’s team’s lead and seemingly putting the Dutch side on track for victory.

However, Japan did not give up.

Despite Kubo’s exit due to injury and the reinforced defense Koeman put in place in the final stretch, Hajime Moriyasu’s team kept pushing until they were rewarded.

In the dying moments, a header by Ogawa and a play inside the box ultimately secured a draw for Japan.

The 2-2 draw was celebrated as a victory by a team that once again demonstrated its World Cup resilience.

The Netherlands is left with the feeling that it let two points slip away, while Japan secures a valuable draw that could prove crucial in Group F of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where every detail will count.
