The highly anticipated biopic about Britney Spears continues to move forward and has just added a key piece to its development. Universal Pictures confirmed that Liz Meriwether has been brought on board to write the screenplay for the project, news that has generated great excitement among fans of the so-called “Princess of Pop” and within the film industry.
The writer, known for creating the hit series *New Girl* and for her work on productions such as *The Dropout* and *Dying for Sex*, will be responsible for adapting the singer’s memoir, *The Woman in Me*, published in 2023 and one of the most successful autobiographical books of recent years.
The film will feature a highly acclaimed creative team from Hollywood. Jon M. Chu, who directed the hit film *Wicked*, will direct, while Marc Platt, who also worked on that successful film musical, will serve as producer.
Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the book in August 2024, following the enormous commercial success of Spears’ autobiography. The book sold more than six million copies worldwide and became the best-selling memoir in the history of Simon & Schuster.
Before its publication, the artist signed a publishing deal valued at approximately $15 million, underscoring the enormous interest in hearing her account of the events that shaped her life.
Liz Meriwether’s Experience

Liz Meriwether’s selection has been well received by experts because of her ability to develop complex characters and blend dramatic moments with touches of humor and sensitivity.
Her work on *New Girl* made her one of the most successful creators in American television, while subsequent projects such as *The Dropout* and *Dying for Sex* earned her additional Emmy nominations.
He will now be responsible for bringing Britney Spears’ personal and professional story to the big screen, while maintaining the intimate tone that characterizes her autobiography.
The film will trace the most important moments of Britney Spears’ career, from her early days as a promising young pop star to her rise as one of the most successful artists of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The film will explore the global impact of hits such as …Baby One More Time, Oops!… I Did It Again, and Toxic—songs that established the singer as an international phenomenon and led her to sell approximately 150 million albums throughout her career.
However, the series will also explore the most complex episodes of her life, including intense media pressure, the personal crises she faced, and the legal proceedings that led to the conservatorship established in 2008, which remained in effect until November 2021, when it ended after a long legal battle spearheaded by the #FreeBritney movement.
Britney Spears Movie: Based on Her Own Account

One of the most significant aspects of the project is that the story will be based directly on *The Woman in Me*, a book in which Britney Spears recounts the most significant moments of her life in the first person.
In its pages, she discusses her rise to fame, the sacrifices she faced from a very young age, the hardships she endured under legal guardianship, and the process that allowed her to regain her independence after more than a decade.
The book also addresses personal issues, such as her romantic relationships, motherhood, and the difficult process of rebuilding her bond with her children after the end of the guardianship.
So far, Universal Pictures has not revealed who will play Britney Spears or when filming will begin. There is also no official release date.
However, the addition of Liz Meriwether marks a decisive step forward for a production that promises to become one of the most anticipated biopics of the coming years. With a top-tier creative team and a story based on the artist’s own account, the film will seek to showcase not only the musical phenomenon that took the world by storm, but also the woman behind one of the most influential figures in contemporary pop.
