The Mexican National Team had an unforgettable night at the Estadio Ciudad de México. With a resounding 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, the team led by Javier Aguirre not only secured its spot in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also set a new record for the Tricolor: for the first time in its 18 World Cup appearances, it finished the group stage with a perfect record—nine points and a clean sheet.

In front of more than 80,000 fans at Azteca Stadium, Mexico showed character, depth in its roster, and a collective effort that bodes well for the knockout stage.

The Czech Republic made for a tough start

The Czech team had to win to keep its hopes of qualifying alive and came out strong from the opening whistle.

In just eight minutes, Denis Visinsky came close to opening the scoring with a shot that went just wide of the goal defended by Raúl Rangel.

For much of the first half, the European team controlled possession, though without creating much danger.

Mexico gradually fought back and began to even the score thanks to the efforts of Luis Romo, Gilberto Mora, and Israel Reyes.

Mexico’s best chances before halftime came from a spectacular bicycle kick by Israel Reyes that went wide, and a shot by Jorge Sánchez that was saved by goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

Although the scoreless tie remained at halftime, the Tricolor was showing signs of improvement.

Mexico sealed the victory in six minutes

The turning point came right at the start of the second half.

In the 55th minute, Luis Romo played a great through ball to Mateo Chávez, who got behind the defense and finished with his left foot, sending the ball into the top corner to make it 1-0.

The goal forced the Czech Republic to push forward, leaving gaps that Mexico immediately exploited.

Six minutes later, Julián Quiñones popped up inside the box to tap in a rebound following a great play started by the young Gilberto Mora—one of the standout players of the match—and extend the lead.

With the score at 2-0, the European team was practically eliminated, and the Mexican team managed the rest of the game intelligently.

Guillermo Ochoa was honored for his World Cup performance

With the match all but decided, Javier Aguirre decided to treat the crowd to one of the most emotional moments of the night.

In the 78th minute, Guillermo Ochoa entered the game, playing his first minutes of the 2026 World Cup and officially making his sixth World Cup appearance, further cementing his legacy as one of the most important Mexican soccer players in history.

In stoppage time, Álvaro Fidalgo sealed the rout with a right-footed shot after capitalizing on a rebound inside the box to make it 3-0.

Mexico Finishes the 2026 World Cup with a Perfect Run

In the other Group A match, South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 and also advanced to the next round.

Mexico finished as the undisputed leader of the group with three wins, nine points, six goals scored, and none conceded—a performance that has boosted the fans’ hopes heading into the knockout stage.

Javier Aguirre’s team’s collective play, depth, and current form make the Tricolor one of the best-performing teams during the first phase of the 2026 World Cup.
