Amid the national emergency caused by the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela, ousted President Nicolás Maduro sent a message to the public from the federal prison in the United States where he is being held on charges of narco-terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons possession.

In a statement posted on his social media accounts and dated in New York, Maduro called on Venezuelans to remain united in the face of the tragedy and asked them to support the rescue teams working in the areas devastated by the 7.5- and 7.2-magnitude earthquakes.

His statement comes as Venezuelan authorities continue to respond to an emergency that has already resulted in a preliminary official death toll of 32 and more than 700 injured.

Maduro Calls for Solidarity Amid the Tragedy

In his message to the “beloved people of Venezuela,” Maduro stated that now is the time to act in solidarity and work together to address the consequences of the natural disaster.

The former president called for ensuring that no one is left without assistance and urged communities to protect children, the elderly, and the sick, as well as to support the efforts of rescue teams, Civil Protection, firefighters, security forces, and volunteers.

He also stressed that the priority must be to help those who lost family members, homes, or personal belongings in the wake of the powerful earthquakes.

“Venezuela has faced great trials”

In his statement, Maduro said that the country has overcome other difficult situations throughout its history and expressed his confidence that the people will manage to pull through once again.

He also called for calm, discipline, and faith during the rescue and reconstruction efforts, while sending a message of spiritual support to the families affected by the tragedy.

The statement concludes with a blessing for the Venezuelan people and an expression of hope in the face of the crisis.

Rescue efforts continue

Meanwhile, Venezuelan authorities have kept the state of emergency in effect and are continuing search and rescue operations, particularly in the state of La Guaira, which has been identified as one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquakes.

National and international teams are participating in the efforts to locate survivors among the collapsed buildings and treat the hundreds of injured.

According to the authorities, the death toll could rise as access to new affected areas is gained and damage assessments in various regions of the country progress.
