Carlos Rivera recently presented “Almas”, a song full of emotion and nostalgia that acts as a tribute to his father, José Gonzalo Rivera, who passed away on August 27, 2022.
The artist has said that this single was born from the deep pain of that loss, transformed into a musical expression that aims to reach out to those who have also gone through grief.
Rivera has confessed that writing the song was a challenge: “It hurts to sing it, but it hurt even more to write it,” he said publicly.
In his creative process he reveals that there was a particularly symbolic moment: he and José Luis Roma were in the studio when the power went out; it was raining outside. That atmosphere, according to Rivera, enhanced the intimate feeling that drove the composition.
In this project, Rivera did not work completely alone: he had the participation of José Luis Roma (member of the duo Río Roma) as co-author. José Luis Roma is a Mexican singer-songwriter known for his contributions to the romantic ballad and for his role in Río Roma.
During the creation, Rivera commented that Roma started with some chords and improvisations when the light was extinguished, and that he then continued on his own to complete the ideas he had in mind.
At one point in the creative chat, Roma even said, “Just let the song be yours,” to which Rivera responded that he felt it was a job for both of them.
Carlos Rivera: Lyrics, Message and Sensitivity

Although the complete lyrics have not been published, fragments that convey the intention of the theme are known:
“And even if I cry and cry again, it’s never going to be enough…because there are souls that will never let go.”
These lines express that genuine love transcends physical absence, and that even though the pain is still present, there is a spiritual connection that endures.
The lyrical approach of “Almas” contrasts with more superficial songs: it is an invitation to remember fondly, to recognize that missing does not imply forgetting, and to embrace the idea that certain souls are destined to stay together beyond goodbye.
With “Almas”, Rivera delivers a more mature piece in her repertoire. The release not only reflects his vocal quality, but also his ability to transform personal experiences into shared art. In public statements he has said that this song also arises as an act of healing, not only for himself, but with the intention of accompanying those who have suffered similar losses.
In various media, it has been highlighted how Rivera takes advantage of this stage of his career to consolidate a deeper connection between his artistic work and his personal trajectory. He himself commented that some songs “hurt to listen to”, and that is why feeling vulnerable when singing them is part of the catharsis process.
“Almas” is positioned as a significant chapter in Carlos Rivera’s discography: a song that functions as a bridge between the past and the present, that turns mourning into poetry and reaffirms that music can sustain the invisible. With this song, Rivera opens a door to memory, but at the same time invites us to preserve what remains: the love that does not die, but evolves into memory.
