U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran that could mark the beginning of the end of one of the most tense conflicts in the Middle East in recent years.

During an official visit to the Palace of Versailles in France, Trump confirmed to the media that the document had already been signed, although he initially declined to provide further details about the process.

“It’s signed (…) I signed it in Versailles,” the president replied briefly when asked about the agreement reached with the Islamic Republic.

Shortly afterward, his advisor Dan Scavino posted a video on the social media platform X, showing Trump signing the memorandum and then handing it to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The signing took place in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, who applauded at that moment, reflecting the diplomatic significance of the announcement.

What does the agreement cover?

The memorandum consists of 14 points and was reached after months of negotiations in which Pakistan served as a mediator between the two sides.

The main objective of the document is to end the war that began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a military offensive against Iran.

The agreement also provides for the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts related to the conflict, including Lebanese territory.

For its part, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already announced that the signing would take place electronically, ruling out the in-person ceremony that had initially been planned to be held in Zurich, Switzerland.

Nuclear negotiations and the lifting of sanctions

One of the most significant provisions of the agreement sets a 60-day deadline for Washington and Tehran to negotiate a final deal on Iran’s nuclear program and the future of the economic sanctions imposed by the United States.

As these negotiations proceed, Iran has pledged to ensure free maritime transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.

In return, the United States will begin to gradually lift the restrictions imposed on Iran, including the lifting of the naval blockade against Iranian ports within 30 days.

Millions of dollars for reconstruction

The agreement also includes significant financial commitments.

According to the announcement, Washington will consider completely lifting sanctions against Iran, releasing Iranian assets frozen abroad, and developing a reconstruction plan estimated at $300 billion.

Although negotiations are still underway to finalize a definitive agreement, the signing of the memorandum represents one of the most significant diplomatic moves by the current administration and could redefine the political and economic balance in the Middle East in the coming years.
