The Tunisian Football Federation has chosen Frenchman Hervé Renard to replace Moroccan Sabri Lamouchi as head coach, following Lamouchi’s dismissal after the team’s 5-1 loss to Sweden in their 2026 World Cup debut.
The Federation announced in a statement on Tuesday that Renard will take over the Tunisian team this afternoon following an agreement that maintains the same financial terms Lamouchi had and also provides for negotiations to begin after the World Cup, with the possibility of extending the contract long-term, depending on the team’s performance.
Hervé Renard Returns to the World Cup to Save Tunisia

Hervé Renard, 57, missed out on the World Cup last April after leaving the Saudi Arabian national team.
The team he had managed to qualify for this tournament and which he coached four years ago at Qatar 2022.
The French coach is a globetrotter in the world of soccer with extensive experience in African soccer.
In fact, throughout his career, he has coached the national teams of Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast, and Morocco.
In addition to teams such as USM Alger and, in France, Sochaux and Lille, as well as the French women’s national team between 2023 and 2024.
Interestingly, in 2014, Renard took over as head coach of the Ivory Coast national team after Lamouchi resigned from his position as coach of the “Elephants.”
This time, the Moroccan, who took office in January, was dismissed following the poor showing in the World Cup opener.

He is competing in his third World Cup

This will be the third time the coach from Aix-les-Bains has led a team at the World Championships.
This comes after their previous match against the Saudi Arabian team and Morocco at Russia 2018.
This time, the match will kick off on Saturday (early Sunday morning in Tunisia) against Japan in Monterrey, Mexico.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Moroccan team came close to qualifying but finished last in Group B.
They lost 1-0 to Iran and Portugal, and came close to beating Spain, but the 2-2 draw meant they were eliminated.
At Qatar 2022, Saudi Arabia pulled off a major upset by defeating Argentina—which went on to win the tournament—2-1.
But then it lost 2-0 to Poland and 2-1 to Mexico, finishing fourth in Group C and thus being eliminated (Filed under: Hervé Renard takes the helm of Tunisia).
