“Aquel,” the TV series based on Raphael’s life, will premiere on Netflix in both Spain and Latin America on October 9, according to a statement released by the platform on Thursday.
As previously reported, there will be a total of eight episodes chronicling the life of one of Spain’s most internationally renowned artists, from his humble beginnings in post-Civil War Spain to his conquest of major international stages.
“This ‘biopic’ not only tells my story, but also reflects a shared history: a career spanning more than six decades marked by unforgettable moments—some well-known, others more intimate; some bright, others more difficult—but all deeply meaningful,” said Raphael (Linares, Jaén, 1943) in remarks reported by Netflix after filming began.
Actor Javier Morgade (“Disco, Ibiza, Locomía”) will play the young Raphael, while Carlos Santos (“The Man with a Thousand Faces”) will portray the mature artist, in a cast that also includes Francesco Carril, Natalia Varela, Pepa Aniorte, and Manolo Caro.
Set in locations ranging from Madrid to Las Vegas, including Moscow, Paris, and Acapulco, the series is produced by Dlo Producciones in association with Caracol Televisión.
With three Grammy Award nominations, he was named Person of the Year 2025 by the Latin Recording Academy and is an honorary citizen of countries and cities such as Mexico, Chile, New York, and Los Angeles.
Raphael’s successful career is reflected in 70 albums, 326 Gold records, 49 Platinum records, and one Uranium record—the only one ever awarded to a Spanish-speaking singer worldwide for sales of more than 50 million copies.
Among his best-known songs are “Yo soy aquel”—which gives the series its title—”Cuando tú no estás,” “Qué sabe nadie,” “Hablemos del amor,” “Estar enamorado,” and “Digan lo que digan,” according to Agencia EFE.
