Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, a federal prison in New York that has returned to the international spotlight following their arrest by U.S. forces and their arraignment on alleged federal charges, including narcoterrorism and drug trafficking conspiracy.

The MDC, located in the Sunset Park neighborhood, is a facility managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and is known for housing high-profile inmates while they await trial or sentencing.

In addition to its importance in the federal system, this facility has faced criticism for its detention conditions, considered harsh and problematic by human rights advocates, with reports of internal violence, lack of resources and strict routines for inmates.

What is the Brooklyn MDC?

The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) was opened in 1994 and functions primarily as a detention center for individuals awaiting federal court appearances in New York or who are in transit to long-term prisons. Following the closure of the Manhattan federal prison complex, the MDC in Brooklyn was left as the main operating federal prison in the city.

This prison currently houses more than 1,300 inmates charged or indicted for serious crimes, including drug trafficking, organized crime and homicide. Because of its inmate profile and the media visibility these cases often have, it is often referred to as one of the most notorious federal prisons in the United States.

Sam Bankman-Fried – The founder of cryptocurrency platform FTX was also detained at the MDC while facing fraud and money laundering charges.

Ghislaine Maxwell – The British socialite linked to the Epstein case was housed in this federal prison during part of her legal proceedings.

In addition to these names, the prison has housed the likes of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, although many were later transferred to other maximum security facilities.

Nicolás Maduro’s presence at the MDC not only underscores the gravity of the legal case he faces, but has also put the global spotlight back on this detention center. With a history of high-profile inmates and conditions that have come under scrutiny, the MDC in Brooklyn continues to be a key focus of US federal justice, especially in cases involving media, political and organized crime figures.
