A court suspended the prison sentence of Spanish singer-songwriter Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar, known by his stage name Diego “El Cigala,” who was sentenced to 25 months in prison for abusing his ex-wife, as confirmed to EFE by his attorney, Eduardo Aguilera.
The suspension, ordered several weeks ago, came after the Madrid Provincial Court and the Supreme Court upheld the ruling handed down in December 2024, following their review of the appeals filed by both parties against it.
Following the ratification, Criminal Court No. 3 of Jerez de la Frontera (in Cádiz, in the south of the country) ordered a suspension of the prison sentence, ruling that none of the three crimes for which the flamenco singer was convicted exceeded the legal threshold required to enforce imprisonment.
However, for the suspension to take effect, “El Cigala” (Madrid, 1968) must meet the requirement of not committing any crimes for two years.
He must also comply with the restraining order against the victim that was issued in the judgment.
Criminal Court No. 3 in Jerez de la Frontera sentenced Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar to two years and one month in prison for three counts of abuse.
One of these cases involved an assault committed against the victim at a hotel in Jerez, for which he was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered not to contact her or come within 200 meters of her for a period of two years.
A second charge of abuse against his ex-wife stemmed from an assault that occurred at a hotel in Palafrugell (Girona, northeast), for which he was sentenced to eight months in prison and ordered not to contact or come within 200 meters of his ex-partner for a period of two years.
The ruling also convicted the flamenco singer of a crime of abuse, aggravated by the assault committed at the home in Jerez where they were living together, for which he was sentenced to eleven months in prison and ordered not to contact her or come within 200 meters of her for a period of two years.
He was also convicted of a minor, ongoing offense of domestic abuse and sentenced to 25 days of electronic monitoring, to be served at a residence different from and far away from the victim’s home, according to Agencia EFE.
