Argentine coach Antonio “el Turco” Mohamed celebrated with emotion the championship won by Toluca in the Clausura 2025 Liga MX Tournament, after defeating Club América 2-0 in a vibrant final played at the Nemesio Díez Stadium. For the coach, the title is the result of a great campaign… and also of a bit of luck.

“Sometimes to be champion you have to be lucky, but we accompanied it with the great campaign. The team defended well and when they had the chance, they took it,” Mohamed told the media after the match.

The final result capped a perfect night for the Red Devils, who broke a title drought dating back to 2010.

Goals from Brazilian Luan García and captain Alexis Vega sealed the 2-0 final score against an América that was looking for a historic tetra-championship.

Mohamed did not hesitate to praise the rival team, coached by Brazilian André Jardine, and highlighted the level of competition shown by América, three-time defending Liga MX champions.

“André is a first-class coach. It’s a credit to beat him. América was the most difficult opponent in the tournament,” he said.

“Now the challenge is for Toluca to get used to these scenarios,” he added, anticipating his desire to make the Mexiquense club a constant protagonist in finals.

During the closing minutes of the match, the coach was captured effusively embracing his two main attackers: Portuguese Paulinho and Alexis Vega, who was recognized as the best player of the final.

For Mohamed, this gesture was not improvised.

“It’s a way of driving that I have; being friends with the footballer. Sometimes that can be counterproductive, but they understood when to enjoy and when to work. That’s where the results are,” explained the coach, visibly moved.

Alexis Vega’s dream fulfilled

Alexis Vega, scorer of the second goal of the match and Toluca’s main man, also expressed his excitement.

The attacker recalled that his return to the club had a clear objective: to be champion.

“I was given the opportunity to win my first league with the team I love. Now I’m going to enjoy three, four, five days without sleep,” he said with a laugh, as he celebrated with his teammates.

Vega also confirmed that he will soon join the national team and said that he will return with the goal of seeking a second championship.

A triumph that resonates beyond Mexico

Toluca’s championship has been celebrated by thousands of fans at home and abroad, especially among the Hispanic community in the United States.

The team, with stars such as Vega and a coach of Mohamed’s stature, has generated sympathy among those who follow Liga MX from abroad, reaffirming the drawing power of Mexican soccer beyond its borders.

With this title, Toluca has now won eleven league championships in its history and reaffirms its status as one of Mexico’s biggest and most traditional clubs.
