Javier Aguirre’s Mexican National Team does not want to leave any loose ends. In a Rose Bowl in Pasadena that vibrated with the unconditional support of the fans, El Tri defeated Australia 1-0 in its penultimate test before the big debut on June 11.

It was not a rout, but it was an exhibition of order and strategy that makes it clear that “Vasco” has a master plan for El Tri on the road to the World Cup.

Johan Vásquez: The wall that also hammers

The guest of honor arrived in the 28th minute.

After a surgical corner kick, Johan Vásquez rose high in the air to connect with a ruthless header that left goalkeeper Mathew Ryan with no chance.

That goal not only opened the scoring, but did justice to a Mexico side that smothered the Aussies from the opening whistle, with Alexis Vega coming close to hitting the corner minutes earlier.

Aguirre’s laboratory: Key tests and returns

The second half was not only to maintain the result, but also for “Vasco” to move his pieces.

The Rose Bowl witnessed the return of players who are coming off cotton wool: Edson Alvarez, Luis Chavez and Santiago Gimenez all saw valuable minutes.

Aguirre exchanged the elegant possession of the first half for a brutal physical display in the second half.

Special mention must go to goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who denied the Socceroos’ clearest chance with a point-blank save to keep a clean sheet before giving way to the legendary Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico vs Australia friendly match

With this victory in the bag, Mexico travels to face Serbia on June 4.

It will be the last absolute “litmus test”.

From there, all the focus will be on the opening match against South Africa, where Mexico, as host, has the obligation to get off on the right foot.
