After a surgical corner kick, Johan Vásquez rose high in the air to connect with a ruthless header that left goalkeeper Mathew Ryan with no chance.
That goal not only opened the scoring, but did justice to a Mexico side that smothered the Aussies from the opening whistle, with Alexis Vega coming close to hitting the corner minutes earlier.

With this victory in the bag, Mexico travels to face Serbia on June 4.
It will be the last absolute “litmus test”.
From there, all the focus will be on the opening match against South Africa, where Mexico, as host, has the obligation to get off on the right foot.
