Madonna will look back on one of the most important moments of her career with the release of “Madonna: Into the Groove,” a book featuring more than 200 photographs taken in 1985, the year the singer went from being a rising star to becoming a true global pop phenomenon.
The book will hit bookstores on October 27 and will feature an extensive collection of photographs taken by renowned photographer Ken Regan, many of which have remained unpublished for decades. The project offers an intimate look at a pivotal period in the artist’s life, both on and off stage.
Madonna: A Look Back at the Year That Cemented Her Status as the Queen of Pop
The book features a selection of snapshots that capture various moments from Madonna’s busy schedule in 1985.
The photographs show the singer during the concerts of her successful Virgin Tour, but also in much more personal settings, such as recording sessions, workouts, breaks at hotels, and moments of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the stage.
In addition, the book includes photos taken during her appearance at the historic Live Aid benefit concert, as well as during the promotion of the film *Desperately Seeking Susan*, a movie that helped cement her image as one of the great cultural icons of the 1980s.
In addition to the photographs, the publication includes articles written by journalist Tomás Mier, a contributor to Rolling Stone magazine, who interviewed several people who worked closely with Madonna during those years.
Notable among the testimonials are those from producer Nile Rodgers, stylist Maripol, and choreographer Brad Jeffries, who share memories of the singer’s creative process and artistic growth.
For Mier, photographs represent much more than just images.
As he explains, Ken Regan’s archive captures Madonna at a pivotal moment both for her career and for the history of popular music, when she was beginning to redefine the concept of a pop star on an international scale.
The book also discusses some of the personal events that took place in the singer’s life during that time.
Among them is her relationship with actor Sean Penn, one of Hollywood’s most high-profile romances of the 1980s.
It is also worth recalling the controversy sparked by the publication of nude photographs taken in 1978, when Madonna was still a young dancer trying to make a name for herself in New York.
Years later, after she had become an international celebrity, those images were acquired and published by Penthouse and Playboy magazines, sparking an intense debate about privacy and control over the public image of public figures.
The Legacy of Ken Regan
The project also pays tribute to photographer Ken Regan, considered one of the great visual chroniclers of 20th-century music.
Regan, who passed away in 2012, photographed some of the greatest legends of rock and pop, including Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and U2.
His close relationships with numerous artists allowed him to capture spontaneous moments that were rarely captured by other photographers, making him a highly respected figure in the music industry.
In addition to documenting historic concerts such as Live Aid and the Human Rights Now! charity tour, he also covered events of international significance, including the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and various moments in the history of the Kennedy family.
“Madonna: Into the Groove” joins the singer’s extensive publishing history; in 1992, she revolutionized the market with “Sex,” the controversial art photography book that became one of the best-selling coffee-table books of all time.
