Lina Luaces, 22 years old and recently crowned Miss Universe Cuba 2025, clearly decided not to participate in Miss Universe USA 2025 despite being born and living in the United States.
In an interview with the Miss Universe Cuba committee, she explained that she never felt American and felt a deep calling to represent her Cuban roots. “I knew I wanted to represent my roots, that I am Cuban and I am very, very proud,” Lina said, stressing her inherited identity.
Lina Luaces: Growing up immersed in Cuban culture

Lina grew up surrounded by “strong Cubans with incredible stories”, absorbing their customs, traditions and ways of being since she was a child.
This cultural connection was key in her decision: although she would qualify for Miss USA – which could have been easier – she opted for a path rooted in her identity and heritage.
In a post on Instagram in June, she shared her internal process and her vision, “with love, discipline, responsibility and above all resilience you start to achieve your goals.”
That reflection was not merely rhetorical: it reinforced his conviction to represent Cuba “with humility and dignity.”
She also contemplated how her choice allows her to advance on her own merits, without relying solely on her famous family – she is the daughter of Lili Estefan and niece of Emilio and Gloria Estefan – and to demonstrate her own preparation, effort and commitment.
Identification with Latin roots

Lina’s decision resonates with many U.S.-born Latinos: it represents a quest to affirm one’s roots and not give in to pre-established paths.
For those living between two cultures, her narrative reinforces that choosing one’s cultural roots can be an act of empowerment and pride.
It also stimulates reflection on the meaning of national identity: it does not always define the place of birth, but the experiences, values and emotional connection to a community.
What’s next for Lina Luaces?

Miss Universe Cuba 2025: crowned on July 8 in Miami, she represented Santiago de Cuba and will soon participate in Miss Universe 2025, which will take place on November 21 in Thailand.
Reception and criticism: his title has generated divided reactions – praise and criticism for not having been born in Cuba or for his level of Spanish – but also defenders who point out his authenticity and roots.

He preferred to be representing Cuba
Lina Luaces did not participate in Miss Universe USA because her heart, her history and her sense of belonging are in Cuba.
His election demonstrates that for many young U.S.-born Hispanics, cultural identity can be more powerful than citizenship, and that following one’s convictions can open authentic paths on global stages.
