La Liga Femenina’ promises to revolutionize urban music as it is the first album performed only by female artists, including Spain’s La Mala Rodríguez and Puerto Ricans Ivy Queen and Nesi, known for collaborating with Bad Bunny on the song ‘Yo perreo sola’.

Music producers Charlee Way and Boy Wonder CF are preparing to release ‘La Liga Femenina’, which contains 19 songs by an equal number of performers, on March 6.

Spanish Naddia, Puerto Ricans J Noa, Chesca and Alexxa Kimm, Dominicans Amara, Chelsy and Keyshia, Mexican Bellakath, Argentinian Valentina Olguín, Chilean Loyaltty and Colombian Ysa C are other artists who have shaped this album.

In an interview with EFE at his recording studio in San Juan, Charlee Way assured that these singers “I’m not saying that they are at the same level” of the already consolidated reguetoneros, “but that they can pass many” of them.

In the early days of reggaeton, the genre was dominated by male performers, except for Ivy Queen, who stood out with the group The Noise, being one of the few singers who remained active and rubbing shoulders with men.

“It is simply that we have to give them that ‘push’. I don’t know if it’s machismo or something like that, but they can speak louder than us, they grab the stage very easily and they are doing more than us. That’s the women’s league,” said Carlos De Jesús Rodríguez, Charlee Way’s first name.

As she explained, the idea of making an all-female urban album came after having worked on the albums ‘La Liga: First Picks’ and ‘La Liga 2: Second Quarter’, in which only new male performers appeared, which led them to bet on a change.

“There were so many, many ladies who wanted to put him in. They were telling us, ‘hell, give me a chance.’ And why don’t we give it to them? Let’s see what can happen,” the producer recalled about the decision made together with Boy Wonder CF.

La Liga Femenina’ and the novelty of the project

Thus, they recorded more than thirty artists, but finally chose 19 for the album: “The best talent from each country,” admitted Charlee Way.

As a collaborative album, ‘La Liga Femenina’ places women at different stages of their careers within the same project, eliminating hierarchies.

“To be able to be part of what is this new project, where these exponents are, is a great honor. I feel very good and grateful to show that ‘La Liga Femenina’ is really hard,” Nesi, 29, told EFE.

For the album ‘La Liga Femenina’, Nesi recorded the song ‘Se vale to’, inspired by the song of similar name of the extinct Puerto Rican group Calle 13.

“We were looking for ideas, how we could integrate that old reggaeton, and we chose that specific one,” explained Génesis Ríos, the singer’s real name.

Nesi became known in the music industry by downloading his own videos improvising or ‘freestyle’, as it is called in the urban genre, as did other artists such as Miky Woodz, Bryant Myers and Guaynaa in mid-2010.

During that time, female performers who have stood out in the industry such as Karol G, Becky G, Young Miko, Anitta, Farina, Tokisha and María Becerra, among others, also appeared in the urban music scene.

“A lot has been said that they haven’t given the ladies much of a break. I think there’s always a battle between them and the guys, and honestly they’re the ones who are commanding the road,” noted Charlee Way.

In this regard, Nesi affirmed that “female talent must be supported”, although she acknowledged that “now it is being given greater exposure”.

The album, according to the producer, “had that little taste that it could be good” and, with what they did, they managed to elevate it “to another level”.

By bringing these performers together in a single project, ‘La Liga Femenina’ sets a benchmark for collaboration between women in international urban music, reported Agencia EFE.
