The Mexican music group Intocable was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, at a ceremony attended by Mexican composer Edgar Barrera and music executive Nir Seroussi.
“Thirty-five years ago, a band like Intocable wasn’t supposed to exist—it went against the rules— but apparently nobody told them,” said Seroussi, president of Interscope Capitol Miami, in a speech in which he celebrated the addition of this star—the 2,852nd—to this iconic Los Angeles avenue.
“At that time, Mexican music had a lot of rules, and Intocable looked at them and said, ‘No, thanks,'” he added.
The group, founded in Zapata, Texas, by Ricky Muñoz and René Martínez in the early 1990s, established itself as one of the leading acts in regional Mexican music by blending traditional norteño rhythms with ballads featuring contemporary lyrics.
Among their most popular songs are “¿Y todo para qué?”, “Aire,” “Te amo (Para siempre),” and “Eres mi droga,” among others. Throughout their career, the group has sold more than 55 million albums and had 21 songs reach number one on the regional Mexican music charts.
“Intocable” features legendary songs
“Ricky picked up the accordion and made it sound like the future. They showed the world what Mexican music could be,” said Seroussi, who noted that the group laid the groundwork for Mexican music to become one of the most widely listened-to genres in the world today.
Barrera, a close friend of the band, described them as “one of the greatest bands in Mexican music.”
The composer, who—along with Residente—holds the record for the most Latin Grammys in history, highlighted the group’s cultural significance.
“Those of us who grew up on the border know that’s where everything blends together: norteño with pop, English with Spanish. It’s a unique identity, and that blend began with Intocable,” he said.
Muñoz was the only member of the band to take the microphone during the ceremony, and during his brief time on stage, the lead singer and accordionist thanked God, his family, his bandmates, his fans, the songwriters, and “all the people who are currently part of Intocable in some way,” reported Agencia EFE.
