The German national team enters this round of 16 as one of the favorites, though it must step up its game after losing to Ecuador in its final group-stage match.
On the other side is Paraguay, a team that advanced as one of the best third-place finishers and, under the guidance of Gustavo Alfaro, relies on defensive solidity as its main tool for competing against any opponent.
In the lead-up to the match, Alfaro made it clear that the Albirroja does not consider itself defeated before taking the field.
The coach pointed out that Paraguay has already faced powerhouses like Argentina and Brazil, so he believes the team has what it takes to compete against Germany as well.
“We’ve already faced Argentina and Brazil—teams of the same caliber or even greater than Germany,” the Argentine coach said at a press conference.
Alfaro also defended the conservative approach he took in the final group-stage match against Australia, in which Paraguay secured the draw it needed to stay alive in the tournament.
For the head coach, in a knockout stage, having possession of the ball isn’t enough: the key will be defensive strength.
“The teams with the most possession are the ones that will go the farthest. But if they don’t have a strong defense, they’ll have a hard time,” he said.
The match against Germany is a huge test for Paraguay, but it’s also an opportunity to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the Round of 16.
For the Mannschaft, on the other hand, the challenge will be to prove they are the best and avoid an upset that could shake up the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
