Cameron Diaz believes that ‘Outcome’, the film she stars in alongside Keanu Reeves, functions as a warning about fame in the age of social media, a phenomenon that, she says, has transformed the way people construct their public identity in recent years.

“When I stopped acting more than a decade ago and took those years off, (social networks) were just beginning, and everything has changed. The whole world has changed with them,” says the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ actress in an interview with EFE.

Apple’s film, which premieres this Friday on the streaming platform, follows the story of Reef Hawke (Reeves), one of Hollywood’s most admired actors, who, after resuming his career after five years away from the spotlight, finds his reputation in jeopardy when an anonymous extortionist threatens to publish a compromising video whose contents he is unaware of.

Like Hawke, though for different reasons, Diaz stayed away from the cameras for a decade to prioritize her personal life. In that time, the 52-year-old actress became a mother, wrote ‘The Longevity Book’, a guide that analyzes female aging leaving aside aesthetic stigmas, and launched her line of organic wines.

Diaz returned to the big screen in 2025 alongside Jamie Foxx in ‘Back in Action,’ and now says the most drastic change she’s been able to find in the industry is in social media.

“Now people have more opportunities to be famous in their own way, within small communities. They can have many followers and define their own fame,” says the actress.

“And I think that’s also, to a large extent, what this film is talking about: a kind of ‘be careful what you wish for’ warning. There are consequences,'” he adds.

Along those lines, the actress who plays Kyle, one of Reeves’ character’s closest teenage friends, adds that the film also poses a reflection on the repercussions of that exposure.

“Reef doesn’t know, as a child, he could never have foreseen it. But today we have many examples in our society. You can’t ignore what celebrity culture does and how it amplifies experiences-sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a deeply tragic way,” he explains.

In the film, Reef Hawk develops an obsession and can’t stop anxiously checking what is being said about him on the Internet. As his fear of exposure grows, he increasingly neglects the people who are with him in real life.

“Reef is nice when people are nice,” Reeves, who blushes visibly when compared to his character, considered one of the industry’s most beloved actors, tells EFE.

“And I think that reflects: when someone is kind, they also inspire kindness. Although sometimes, in his youth, Reef didn’t think much of others, but he’s not really a bad person,” the actor adds.

His character revisits the decisions he has made throughout his career and is confronted with his mistakes, which makes him reflect on his past behavior.

“I thought it would be interesting and valuable, both for this character and for the stories, to take on what he’s going through and explore the friendships you have in life,” he explains.

Hawke is also sustained by the friendship of Xander, played by Matt Bomer, who, along with Kyle, constantly reminds the protagonist of the importance of paying attention to the real world, rather than the virtual one.

“I think the beautiful thing about this friendship is that they’ve created an ecosystem for themselves, where they can be their most authentic version of themselves with each other, the three of them together,” Bomer said, reported Agencia EFE.
