Belgium ties with Iran, and the tension continues to mount at the 2026 World Cup. Belgium and Iran played to an intense 0-0 draw in Inglewood, California—a result that keeps the group standings wide open and forces both teams to fight for their future on the final day of the group stage.

Although the score remained unchanged throughout the 90 minutes, the match was far from boring. Belgium took control of the ball from the start, while Iran opted for a more conservative strategy based on defensive organization and counterattacks. The final result reflects the tremendous parity between two teams that knew a loss could seriously jeopardize their hopes of advancing to the round of 16.

Belgium had possession, but couldn’t score

From the opening whistle, the European team dominated possession by a wide margin.

During the first half, they completed more than 300 passes, a figure far higher than Iran’s.

However, their dominance on the field did not translate into goals.

The team coached by Rudy García faced a very well-organized Iranian defense, which employed a five-man back line to close down spaces and neutralize any Belgian offensive attempts.

Despite creating a few dangerous chances in the first half, Belgium was never able to find the clarity needed to break through Team Melli’s defensive wall.

Iran came close to pulling off an upset

Although Iran ceded possession for much of the game, it also had chances to secure the victory.

The most important one came in the 25th minute when their star player, Mehdi Taremi, managed to put the ball in the back of the net.

However, the celebration was short-lived because the play was called back for offside.

The play made it clear that the Iranians remained dangerous when they found openings to launch a counterattack.

One of the key moments came in the second half with the ejection of Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy.

The red card completely changed the course of the game.

Belgium lost its composure and was forced to fall back to avoid a defeat, while Iran pushed forward and began attacking more frequently.

Despite their numerical advantage, the Asian team was also unable to score the goal that would have given them a historic victory.

A standings race that will go down to the wire

The tie means both teams must earn points in the final match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both Belgium and Iran still have a chance to advance, but they can no longer afford to make any mistakes.

In addition, the outcome of the match between Egypt and New Zealand could have a direct impact on the group standings.

For now, the suspense remains, and the standings will be decided in a final matchday that promises thrills right up to the last minute.
