The Mexican national soccer team completed an intense day of training on Sunday in preparation for their second Group A match of the World Cup, scheduled for this Thursday in Guadalajara against South Korea, although head coach Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre is keeping the identity of the replacement for the suspended César Montes under wraps.

Aguirre has hinted that the leading candidate to replace Montes, the defender for Russia’s Lokomotiv, is Edson Álvarez of Turkey’s Fenerbahçe.

Montes was sent off at the end of the World Cup opener, which El Tri won 2-0 against South Africa last Thursday at Azteca Stadium.

The team trained at the Mexican Football Federation’s High-Performance Center, which has the same type of turf as the stadium where they will face the Asian team.

The portion of the training session open to the press provided a glimpse of the skillful ball control displayed by Gilberto Mora, the new star of Mexican soccer, who made his debut on Thursday.

The players trained in a relaxed atmosphere ahead of their match against South Korea, which defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in its opening game.

Thursday’s match could begin to pave the way for qualification from the group stage to the round of 32 (Filed under: Javier Aguirre keeps Mexico guessing).

The first candidate is Edson Álvarez

Mexico is scheduled to train behind closed doors this Monday.

In the attack, everything seems to indicate that Julián Quiñones, a naturalized Colombian, and Raúl Jiménez, who scored the goals in the season opener, will once again lead the attack for El Tri.

Accompanied by Roberto Alvarado.

In midfield, following their strong performances, Erik Lira and Álvaro Fidalgo are poised to once again be the driving forces in the center of the field (Filed under: Javier Aguirre keeps Mexico guessing).
