Puerto Rican singer Draco Rosa, known for his career in Latin music, was granted Colombian citizenship on Friday, President Gustavo Petro announced via his X account.

“Many people around the world today are proud to hold Colombian citizenship, because it is a citizenship of freedom and life,” the president said.

The government granted citizenship to the singer-songwriter today, although the decision was announced in February of last year, when Draco Rosa applied for Colombian citizenship and the government decided to grant it to him.

Robi Draco Rosa, the stage name of Robert Edward Rosa Suárez (Long Island, 1969), was born in the United States and is of Puerto Rican descent. He is a multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Award winner and has enjoyed a successful musical career spanning more than forty years.

Highlights of his musical career include songs he wrote himself, such as “María,” “La copa de la vida,” “Vagabundo,” “Penélope,” “Blanca mujer,” “Madre tierra,” “Brujería,” “La flor del frío,” and “Más y más,” among others.

The Petro administration has granted citizenship to other figures, including Nicaraguan writer Sergio Ramírez, a symbol of a group of opposition figures whom Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, stripped of their citizenship, according to Agencia EFE.
