“Shrek 5” released its first trailer in Spanish on Tuesday, revealing that Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez will be the voice of Donkey—a return eagerly awaited by fans of the DreamWorks franchise, which the actor himself also confirmed on his social media accounts.

The trailer released by Universal Pictures Mexico stands out for its Mexican accents and colloquial expressions, led by Derbez and Dulce Guerrero, who returns to the Kingdom of Very, Very Far Away to play Fiona in the feature film set to premiere on July 30, 2027.

Although one of the main points of controversy surrounding the return of the animated film is the absence of Alfonso Obregón as the voice of Shrek, since the Spanish-language trailer featured the character with a new voice actor, whose identity has not yet been confirmed.

Obregón’s participation in the film was thrown into doubt after the voice actor posted a video on social media in January 2026 in which he stated that he would not return to the project unless the production company provided him with fair financial compensation and recognized him as the film’s dubbing director.

“If the company that’s going to produce ‘Shrek 5’ doesn’t reach out to me and we don’t sit down to discuss giving me credit at the beginning of the movie (…) and work things out regarding the money, I’m not going to do it, no big deal,” he stated at the time in a post on his official Instagram account.

In Mexico’s dubbing industry, Obregón is known for having voiced Shrek since the first film’s release in 2001, as well as for playing characters such as Bugs Bunny and Kakashi Hatake in *Naruto*.

However, the career of this voice-acting instructor has been marred by allegations of sexual abuse made by some of his students, claims that led to his arrest by the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office in 2024.

So far, it is unclear whether the allegations against him influenced DreamWorks’ decision to exclude Obregón’s voice from this first trailer, or whether the actor might join the cast of “Shrek 5” at a later date, according to Agencia EFE.
