Ilia Topuria’s historic night at the White House ended up being one of the most painful defeats of his career. The Spanish fighter of Georgian origin lost the UFC lightweight title after falling to American Justin Gaethje in the main event held during President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday celebration.

The fight, held in an unprecedented setting at the U.S. presidential residence, ended Topuria’s professional undefeated streak; he had entered the bout with a perfect record of 17 wins and no losses. The result left the European champion with a 17-1 record and ushered in a new era in the UFC lightweight division.

The fight took place in an octagon set up specifically for the occasion in the South Lawn of the White House, where thousands of guests attended an event organized as part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump took prime seats in the front row to watch every detail of the fight.

From the very first rounds, it was clear that Gaethje was ready to defy the odds.

The American relentlessly pounded Topuria’s face, inflicting severe injuries that impaired his vision as the rounds went on.

Although the Spaniard showed the heart and tenacity that made him one of the most popular fighters on the circuit, the cumulative damage ultimately proved too much.

At the end of the fourth round, even though Topuria insisted on continuing, his brother Aleksandre decided to intervene and asked for the fight to be stopped after a doctor recommended ending it for safety reasons.

A bitter defeat

The defeat was particularly bitter given the tense atmosphere that had surrounded the match all week.

A few days earlier, Gaethje had publicly mocked Topuria’s divorce during comments to the media.

Later, the two got into a scuffle during a press conference in front of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington, where the Spaniard shoved his rival.

With this victory, Justin Gaethje becomes the new UFC lightweight world champion and adds one of the most significant wins of his professional career to his record.

Meanwhile, Topuria’s future remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Despite the crushing defeat, the fighter remains one of the top names in mixed martial arts, and many fans are already looking forward to a potential rematch that would give him a chance to reclaim the belt he lost on a night that will forever go down in UFC history.
