FIFA plans to give VAR the power to review corner kicks and second yellow cards at the next World Cup in 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada, according to the British newspaper “The Times”.

This initiative would be on a trial basis, with the intention of ensuring that refereeing at the World Cup is as accurate as possible and that no mistakes are made in key plays that could interfere with the outcome of the matches.

Corners and second yellows could be reviewed.

In this way, video refereeing will be able to review corner kicks, in case the referees on the field have made a mistake.

As well as second yellow cards, so that they do not result in incorrect expulsions.

Such practices are common in FIFA tournaments, which already used several events in 2017 to test VAR before it was officially approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the institution that governs the rules of the game.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced at the end of last October that it will propose that the VAR be able to intervene in the event of a second yellow card being shown incorrectly.

In a virtual meeting of the Football and Technical Advisory Committees (FAP-TAP), the IFAB discussed several issues.

One was in connection with the video assistant referee (VAR) protocol.

It was therefore discussed, among other things, that video referees should have the possibility to intervene when an incorrect second yellow card has been shown.

This proposal will be presented at the IFAB annual meeting to be held on January 20, 2026 in London.

In addition, during the Arab Cup, which kicks off this week in Qatar, FIFA will test a new rule whereby a player receiving medical attention for an injury will have to leave the field for two minutes unless the offender has received a yellow or red card.

This is intended to put an end to wasted time and to teams forcing these stoppages in order to receive instructions from the coach.
