The Mexican National Team took a decisive step forward on its path to the 2026 World Cup. With a solid, intense performance backed by a completely devoted crowd at Estadio Ciudad de México, the team led by Javier Aguirre defeated Ecuador 2-0 to secure its spot in the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on July 6.
The match began an hour later than scheduled due to a thunderstorm that forced FIFA to delay the start of the game for safety reasons. Once the skies cleared, the atmosphere in the stadium changed completely: more than 80,000 fans made their presence felt in one of the most iconic venues in world soccer.

Mexico came out determined to dictate the terms from the very first minute.
However, Ecuador had the first chance when John Yeboah hit the post after a save by Raúl Rangel, who prevented the goal with a great reflex save.
That play sparked the Tri into action, and they began to dominate possession and find openings down the wings.
The reward came in the 22nd minute.
Julián Quiñones, one of Mexico’s standout players in the tournament, took advantage of a perfect run, entered the box, and fired a powerful shot that caught goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez off guard to open the scoring.
It was his third goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the goal that sparked euphoria among Mexican fans.
Far from resting on their lead, Javier Aguirre’s team kept up the high pressure and scored their second goal just nine minutes later.
In the 31st minute, Raúl Jiménez, who returned to the starting lineup for this match, received the ball inside the box and finished with a well-placed shot into the corner to make it 2-0 and put Mexico on track to advance.

In the second half, Ecuador tried to mount a comeback with offensive substitutions, including the entry of Kendry Páez and Kevin Rodríguez, but the Mexican defense responded with discipline and maintained control of the match.
Javier Aguirre also managed his star players’ efforts, bringing in Santiago Giménez, Orbelín Pineda, and other players to close out the game without any surprises.
In addition to the result, Mexico demonstrated one of its key strengths in this World Cup: defensive balance.
The team kept another clean sheet and displayed a mature performance, controlling the pace of the game and capitalizing on key moments against an opponent that came into the match highly motivated after eliminating Germany in the group stage.
With this victory, El Tri keeps its World Cup dream alive and now knows what its next challenge will be.
On July 6, they will play again in Mexico City, seeking a spot among the top eight teams in the 2026 World Cup against the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
