Colombian singer Karol G published an open letter addressed to Colombia’s president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, in which she asks him to govern “for everyone,” to listen to both those who voted for him and those who supported other candidates, and to remember that power “is not a trophy” but “a responsibility.”

In the post, shared on her social media accounts a week after the second round of the presidential election, the artist states that she is not writing “as a supporter” or “as an opponent,” but rather “as a Colombian who deeply loves her country,” and she maintains that, following the elections, “the campaign is over” and now “the hardest part begins: governing for everyone.”

Carolina Giraldo (Karol G’s given name) states that, although 12.9 million Colombians supported the new president and another 12.7 million voted for the leftist Iván Cepeda, they all share the desire to live in “a safer, fairer country with more opportunities and less hatred.”

In that regard, the artist urges the president-elect to also listen to those who did not support him at the polls and to govern “for Colombia” rather than “for a party, an ideology, or a sector.”

“I want to ask you to remember, every day, that the power you received a week ago is not a trophy, it is not a prize—it is a responsibility,” the singer wrote in one of the most notable passages of the letter.

At the end of her message, Karol G asserts that the country needs “leaders capable of uniting” the people, with “courageous decisions” and “results,” and expresses her hope that, by the end of his term, Colombians will be able to recognize that the president “lived up to the responsibility entrusted to him.”

“Because in the end, no president wins when he wins an election… A president wins when his people win,” the letter concludes, according to Agencia EFE.
