Hollywood’s leading actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, will honor the career of U.S. star Harrison Ford at the 61st edition of its awards, to be held on March 1 in Los Angeles.

“Ford is a singular presence in American life; an actor whose iconic characters have shaped world culture. His career has been endlessly exciting, always returning to his passion for acting. We are honored to celebrate a legend whose impact on our art is indelible,” SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin said in a statement Thursday.

The actor of the legendary ‘Indiana Jones’ movie saga said he was “deeply honored” by this recognition: “I’ve spent most of my life on film sets, working alongside incredible actors and crews, and I’ve always felt grateful to be part of this community,” he added.

With an extensive film career spanning more than 50 years, his role as Bob Falfa in ‘American Graffiti’ (1973) laid the groundwork for an actor who rose to worldwide stardom in 1977 with his portrayal of Han Solo in the ‘Star Wars’ saga and elevated the franchise to a cultural phenomenon. In 1981, he debuted in another iconic role: the archaeologist Indiana Jones.

The American performer has also been a leading environmental and humanitarian advocate, “serving as vice president of Conservation International and lending his voice to global conservation efforts through EarthShare, Restore Hetch Hetchy and the climate-focused documentary series ‘Years of Living Dangerously,'” noted SAG-AFTRA.

The American Screen Actors Guild Awards annually recognize the most outstanding film and television performances of the previous year, after a vote in which the 160,000 members of this institution can participate.

Along with the Oscars, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, the SAG Awards are one of the most important events of the Hollywood awards season, reported Agencia EFE.
