Bipolarity without stigmas
Por Miriam Gonzalez ·

Talking about mental health without prejudice continues to be one of the great challenges within the Latino community. Aware of this need, the podcast Alquimia Interior presents a new episode entitled “Bipolar without stigmas: how to recognize signs, break myths and live in balance”, a deep, clear and empathetic conversation that seeks to dismantle false beliefs about bipolar disorder and offer real tools to understand and accompany it. HERE you can listen to the podcast.
The show is hosted by Paty Leal, creator and host of Alquimia Interior, recognized for her trajectory in wellness, personal development and emotional growth. In this episode, Paty welcomes Ide Mancilla, who provides an accessible and profound explanation about bipolarity, integrating the emotional, the neurobiological and the spiritual, without falling into stigmas or simplifications.

From the outset, the episode makes clear a central idea: a diagnosis does not define a person’s value.
Ide Mancilla explains that bipolarity goes far beyond the so-called “mood swings”.
These are intense mood disturbances that can manifest themselves in episodes of mania or hypomania – characterized by overflowing euphoria, mental acceleration, impulsivity and a sense of grandiosity.
As well as in phases of deep depression, where daily functionality can be seriously affected.
One of the most relevant points of the episode is the clarification of why phrases like “you’re bipolar” used as a joke are harmful.
Ide Mancilla and Paty Leal explain that these types of expressions minimize a complex condition and reinforce stigmas that hinder timely diagnosis and access to treatment.
Among the warning signs addressed are sleep disturbances, impulsive spending, risky decisions, extreme irritability, rapid speech and sudden changes in sociability.
The episode also delves into the difference between mania and happiness.
While happiness is described as a feeling of inner peace and stability, mania is presented as an intense, exalted and brief emotion, which can even be mistaken for a “spiritual awakening”.
However, Ide stresses that true spirituality usually brings calm and balance, not chaos and loss of control.
Bipolarity and depression
Another key issue is the frequent confusion between bipolarity and depression.
Signs such as anedonia, i.e., loss of pleasure from previously rewarding activities, are discussed, as well as the risk of suicidal ideation in severe depressive episodes.
In this context, the episode emphasizes the importance of proper diagnosis and comprehensive treatment combining psychiatric care – with personalized medication – and psychotherapy, mentioning approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy for emotional and habit regulation.
Paty and Ide also warn about the risk of abandoning treatment when the person “feels well”, as relapses can be more intense and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization.
It also addresses what to do in the event of psychotic symptoms or hallucinations in severe crises, such as hearing voices or losing contact with reality, pointing out that in these cases it is essential to seek immediate psychiatric care.
The episode closes with a powerful reflection on the role of the family and couples: the importance of an informed support network, accompaniment with love and patience, and the need to establish clear boundaries, especially when risky behaviors exist.
The final message is direct and hopeful: bipolarity does not define the person who lives it, it is not “curable” but it is treatable, and with professional support and perseverance it is possible to lead a full, functional and balanced life.
This new episode of Alquimia Interior adds to the efforts to open necessary conversations about mental health from a place of respect, information and humanity, something especially valuable for the Hispanic community in the United States.
The episode is now available on all available audio platforms, such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify, where you can also listen to other titles promoted by QuéOnnda and Nueva Network such as Interdimensional Astrology and Rebirth in Grief.
