Aylín Mujica gave her first interview since the death of her eldest son, Mauro Menéndez—a moment she described as the most painful of her entire life. The actress decided to speak publicly in order to set the record straight regarding various accounts that began circulating after the tragedy and to share how she has been coping with this difficult time.
In a conversation with journalist Verónica Bastos, the actress explained that her intention is to recount the events exactly as they happened.
“I want to tell it like it is, so that all those out-of-place comments don’t keep coming up,” he said at the beginning of the interview.
Mujica recalled the moment he received the news of Mauro’s death while he was at the Panama airport. As he described it, the shock was so great that he still finds it hard to comprehend what happened.

The actress explained that she was on the phone with two of her closest friends when she received the devastating news.
“I couldn’t, I just couldn’t. I was sitting at the airport, talking to my best friends, Laura and Ayeza, saying, ‘I don’t understand, I don’t understand, I don’t understand,'” she recalled.
While her friends reacted with despair on the other end of the line, Aylín tried to stay calm in the midst of a crowded airport.
“My friends were screaming into the phone, and I was trying to stay calm, right in the middle of the Panama airport, as if I were all alone. The world came to a standstill, and there I was, sitting in a chair, crying nonstop, unable to make sense of the situation,” she recounted.
His words reflect the deep shock he felt upon learning of his son’s death.
During the interview, Mujica confessed that he still can’t find an explanation for Mauro’s departure and admitted that he constantly wonders why it had to happen.
“I say, if I were a bad mom, maybe I’d deserve it, but I’ve been a mom first and foremost, even before being a woman,” she said.
The actress explained that, throughout her life, she has always prioritized her children and her career over any romantic relationship.
“For me, being a mother is more important than being a woman. I don’t have a partner because I’ve always focused more on my children and my career than on relationships,” she said.
He also said that he finds it impossible to understand why a young man whom he describes as noble, beloved, and kind had to lose his life.
“I wonder why such a cute, kind, and beloved child has to leave,” she said, clearly moved.
What Is Known About Mauro’s Death
Journalist Mandy Fridmann was the first to report on the death of Mauro Menéndez, which occurred on the night of July 16.
Later, Francisco Mujica, the young man’s paternal grandfather, explained that Mauro had returned from Los Angeles with symptoms similar to a cold.
According to his account, the young man convinced his family that he was already feeling better and decided to travel to Barbados.
Once on the island, he went to a hospital, where the doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia.
Francisco Mujica explained that he subsequently suffered two heart attacks as a result of health complications.
“Unfortunately, he suffered two heart attacks as a result, and his body couldn’t handle it. They tried to resuscitate him several times, but to no avail,” he said.
After hearing the news, Aylín Mujica and her ex-husband Osamu Menéndez immediately traveled to Barbados to complete the necessary paperwork.
However, as Mandy Fridmann explained, the death occurred on a Thursday, and because of legal procedures and the weekend, it was not possible to immediately transport the body to Miami, as her parents had wished.
After completing their initial errands, they both returned on Saturday, July 18, to meet up with the rest of the family.
According to the reporter, one of Mauro’s parents’ biggest concerns has been their inability to quickly transport his remains to Miami to say goodbye to him as they had planned.
“Their parents’ greatest anguish is not being able to have Mauro’s remains in Miami, not being able to hold a ceremony or a Mass for him,” Fridmann said.
As she continues to grieve, Aylín Mujica says that talking about her son is a way to honor his memory and prevent inaccurate stories from continuing to circulate about one of the most difficult times she has ever faced in her life.
