The start of the Major League Soccer(MLS) playoffs for Los Angeles FC (LAFC) takes on a special dimension this 2025 when they host Austin FC in a best-of-three series. But the focus goes beyond just the matchup: it’s all about the record signing who changed the competitive landscape for the Los Angeles club: Son Heung-min.

The South Korean striker arrived at LAFC in August 2025 for an MLS record fee -around USD 26.5 million according to reliable reports-, leaving behind a decade at Tottenham Hotspur. Since his arrival, LAFC’s offensive dynamics have shown a substantial change: Son Heung not only provides goals (he has already scored 9 in his first games), but also generates spaces and imbalances that empower his teammates.

“Son completely changes the equation.”

Coach Steve Cherundolo makes no secret of it:

“Having Sonny (Son Heung-min) completely changes the equation,” he said, underlining the new signing’s influence in training and in the locker room.

That blend of European experience, leadership and match-deciding ability makes LAFC one of the forces to watch in the West of the league.

For its part, Austin FC does not present itself as an easy opponent.

The Texan club has been consistent this year thanks to its solid defensive block and quick transitions.

That structure poses a clear challenge for LAFC, who will need to impose their rhythm and take advantage of Son Heung’s creativity.

As well as his understanding with his star teammate Denis Bouanga, who has seen his level rise with the presence of the South Korean by his side.

For Son Heung-ming, the motivation is also extra:

His first MLS impact comes on the scene at this big moment in the postseason.

The combination of his technical skills – precise finishing, speed, link-up play – along with the character of people who have already competed at the highest level in Europe, gives him a plus for the Angelina franchise.

This Wednesday, from BMO Stadium at 7:30 p.m. PT (broadcast on Apple TV), the spark in this series will be ignited.

For the Latino community in the U.S., represented in part by the large Korean-American and multicultural presence in Los Angeles, tonight is not just about soccer:

It is a statement of intent.

If LAFC can win, they will have the opportunity to seal their place in the next round and continue their quest for glory.
