Major League Soccer (MLS) announced Wednesday that it is investigating Casemiro’s signing with Inter Miami due to possible unauthorized contact with the player, whose rights in the North American league belonged to the Los Angeles Galaxy, the club that was required to authorize any negotiations.

“Major League Soccer is reviewing an allegation of match-fixing against Inter Miami. The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from making further comments until the review is complete,” the organization said in a statement.

According to sources cited by ESPN, the Galaxy filed a complaint with the league against Inter Miami for contacting Casemiro before the deadline.

The Los Angeles team held the discovery rights to Casemiro.

A mechanism available to teams that grants them the exclusive right to negotiate with a specific international player.

And avoid competing with the other clubs in the league.

If another team wants to sign a player “discovered” by a rival, it must purchase the rights from that club before negotiating with the player in question.

“Although Inter Miami and the Los Angeles Galaxy have reached an agreement regarding the ‘right of first refusal’ to sign Casemiro, the terms will be made public once the investigation into match-fixing is concluded,” the league said.

Inter Miami announced on Wednesday the signing of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro through May 2027.

However, he may extend his contract through the end of the 2029 season.

The club did not specify, however, which roster spot the player will occupy.

Inter Miami does not have any of its three Designated Player spots available.

A formula that allows the salaries of those players to be excluded from the MLS’s strict salary cap.

Casemiro’s signing is pending the issuance of his work visa.
