U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated Friday in New York that the 2026 World Cup has “broken records,” becoming the “biggest in history,” and suggested that the United States host the tournament again in the future.
“I suggest—since it’s been so successful (…)—that what we should do is choose the U.S. again and leave Mexico and Canada out. It was nice to have them. But let’s choose someone else for the next one,” the president said at a reception at Trump Tower.

Trump was accompanied by Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA.
He showered the politician with praise and emphasized that the organization’s mission is to bring joy to the world through sports.
“Gianni had another idea; he said we could have China and the U.S. next time.”
“That way we can have a nice, short flight between games. The players would love that,” he joked, with the FIFA president laughing beside him.
According to the Republican, the World Cup has drawn 6.5 million attendees so far.
A figure that makes it “the tournament with the highest attendance in the history of all sports.”

During his speech, which had a relaxed tone, he congratulated Infantino on organizing the event and on the “unforgettable moments.”
Among them was the controversy surrounding the red card given to U.S. national team forward Folarin Balogun.
“I was forced to call Gianni and make a recommendation (…)”.
“Let that guy finish the game! No, I didn’t say that. I said, ‘I’d like to file a complaint.'”
“I didn’t know what was going to happen, but it turned out for the best, because there’s no controversy: they won the game,” he said.
Trump concluded his remarks by wishing “good luck to Spain and Argentina on Sunday.”
With the final scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and without revealing who he supports, he concluded:
