Singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento, one of the great voices of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), is hospitalized with pneumonia, his press team reported Friday.

Nascimento, 83, who was previously diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and a form of dementia, is “stable” and continues to show “good clinical progress,” according to information posted on the artist’s social media accounts.

His team emphasized that pneumonia is “a common problem” given his current health condition.

Doctors, however, estimate that he will be discharged from the hospital “in the coming days” to continue treatment at home.

Milton Nacimento had retired some time ago

Nascimento officially retired from the stage in 2022 with the conclusion of the tour titled “The Last Music Session,” though this did not prevent him from participating in special events.

In 2025, the famous composer of classics such as “Canción de América” and “María María” paraded with the Portela samba school, one of the most popular in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, which paid tribute to him.

Before his retirement from the stage, he had already been suffering from health problems, exacerbated by his diabetes and heart conditions, which forced him to be hospitalized several times; on one of those occasions, he underwent a cardiac catheterization.

A guitarist himself, with a 60-year career in music, he has recorded 34 albums and performed with dozens of groups and musicians from other countries, including Mercedes Sosa, Fito Páez, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Sting, Paul Simon, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Duran Duran.

Nascimento is the winner of an international Grammy Award, four Latin Grammys—one of which was a Lifetime Achievement Award—and has received numerous nominations.

Among his awards, the 1998 Grammy for Best World Music Album for his album *Nascimento* and the 2000 Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album for *Crooner* stand out, according to Agencia EFE.
