England Knocks Out Norway. Just as he did in the Round of 16 against Mexico, Jude Bellingham scored a brace on Saturday in Miami to sink the Norwegian ship with a 1-2 victory, sending England to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup after a match that was decided in extra time and featured two goals —one for each team—and a penalty call overturned by VAR.
The “Three Lions” bounced back from Andreas Schjelderup’s spectacular goal and tied the match in stoppage time of the first half, before sealing the victory in extra time, where they showed more grit than the Vikings.

The match in Miami was a historic one for Norway, which had never reached the quarterfinals of a World Cup or European Championship, but the first half-hour will not go down in history.
England passed the ball back and forth, and a free kick from the edge of the box that Kane sent well over the crossbar, along with Anthony Gordon’s runs down the left, were the only highlights of the opening minutes.
Lulled by the English pace, it was Norway that had to land the first blow.
After two close calls by Haaland—the second of which was a header saved by Jordan Pickford—a shot by Schjelderup from the left wing found the back of England’s net after hitting the post.
It’s hard to tell whether the Norwegian—the biggest new addition to the starting lineup after his two assists against Brazil—intended to shoot or was trying to cross the ball, but it was enough to put the Nordic team ahead and shake up a game that had more flashes of brilliance than sustained play.

The first chance after the goal went to Norway again, although Alexander Sorloth was caught off guard on a counterattack in which he was running alongside Haaland against a single defender, and England took the next turn.
Bellingham, just as he did in the Round of 16 against Mexico, carried England on his back.
He tied the game after receiving a great pass from Gordon, cutting inside past two defenders in the box, and firing a shot across the goal.
The Norwegian bench protested that the ball had touched the cable of the “spidercam” hovering over the field, but FIFA stated in a subsequent press release that the ball’s sensor did not indicate that such contact had occurred.
Bellingham also set up Kane for the goal that made it 1–2, but the No. 9 was slightly offside and his goal was disallowed.
England’s first half left much to be desired, despite a late surge, and head coach Thomas Tuchel brought in Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze for Noni Madueke and Declan Rice after halftime to shake up the team.
However, the problem lay at the back—in the defense that has saved so many games for the English in recent years, but which today, with Stones coming in to replace the suspended Jarell Quansah, was struggling to contain the Norwegian attacks.

One of those Viking-style attacks, on a corner kick, put the score at 2–1 for a few seconds, but VAR instructed the referee to review the play due to a previous shove by Haaland, and ordered the corner kick to be retaken and the score to be restored to a tie.
Perhaps spurred on by the disallowed goal, Norway began to gain momentum in the match, improving after the 67th minute with the entry of Oscar Bobb and Antonio Nusa on the wings, and gradually pinned England back.
With no clear-cut scoring chances, Kristoffer Ajer had the best opportunity when he headed a corner kick off the crossbar with fifteen minutes remaining in regulation time.
England, however, gradually managed to break free from that control and finished the 90 minutes stronger, though without scoring a goal.

Overtime began with a gift from Nyland, one of Norway’s best players so far in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a goal almost identical to Spain’s game-winner the day before.
The goalkeeper was unable to stop a powerful shot by Morgan Rogers from outside the box, and Bellingham capitalized on the rebound to score his sixth goal of the season, sending the English fans into a frenzy.
The lead could have been even greater when Clément Turpin called a penalty on Djed Spence a few minutes later, but once again VAR stepped in to overturn the French referee’s original decision—a referee who has had calmer afternoons.
The second half of extra time began with a surprising development: Haaland was substituted even though Norway needed a goal.
With Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, the world’s No. 1 chess player, watching from the stands, it seemed as though Stale Solbakken was sacrificing his most important player for the sake of the team’s success.
But it was a futile effort, and Norway failed to create any real danger in the final 15 minutes, amid crosses from the wings and long balls that failed to find the forwards.
