The competition at the North American box office produced a clear winner during its second weekend in theaters. Toy Story 5, the latest installment in Pixar’s hit franchise, retained the top spot in theaters across the United States and Canada, grossing $70 million—a figure that allowed it to comfortably stay ahead of Supergirl, DC Studios’ new release, which opened to $38 million.

The animated film’s performance confirms the public’s strong interest in the story of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and their friends, who have once again managed to win over both new generations and fans who have followed the franchise since its debut three decades ago.

The success of the Pixar film was not limited to North America. During the same period, the film grossed an additional $89.1 million in international markets, bringing its global box office total to $585 million in just two weeks since its release.

These results cement *Toy Story 5* as one of the biggest box office hits of the year and demonstrate the enduring popularity of a franchise that continues to generate interest around the world.

The combination of nostalgia, endearing characters, and new stories has allowed the film to maintain a steady pace at the box office, and it is on track to surpass major milestones in the coming weeks.

In contrast, *Supergirl* had a much more modest opening. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, grossed $38 million in the United States and Canada, while it added another $30 million in the rest of the world, for a global total of $68 million during its first weekend in theaters.

Although the studio had expected better results, the film’s opening fell short of several industry analysts’ projections and received a mixed response from both critics and the public.

On movie review sites, the film received a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience members surveyed by CinemaScore gave it a “B-” rating—indicators that reflect a less enthusiastic reception than expected.

The figures also place *Supergirl* behind other recent releases based on DC Comics characters. Productions like The Flash debuted with $55 million, while Green Lantern opened with $53 million. It barely managed to outperform the opening of Joker: Folie à Deux, which had opened with $37.7 million.

The film had an estimated budget of $170 million and marks the second major theatrical release under the creative direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took the helm at DC Studios in late 2022.

Its first film, *Superman*, performed considerably better, grossing $618 million worldwide.

The Challenge of Superhero Movies

Experts believe that *Supergirl*’s performance reflects the transformation the superhero genre is undergoing. After dominating the global box office between 2017 and 2019, comic-book-based movies have seen a significant decline in revenue since the pandemic.

Meanwhile, *Toy Story 5* proves that family franchises with a solid fan base continue to have enormous box-office appeal, establishing itself as one of the year’s most successful films and making it clear that Pixar remains one of the strongest brands in the entertainment industry.
