The group stage of the 2026 World Cup has officially come to an end, and the 16 matchups for the Round of 16 have now been determined—a stage that marks the start of the knockout round, where any mistake could mean a definitive exit from the tournament.
The final matchday of Group J completed the picture. Argentina, the defending world champion, confirmed its dominance by finishing in first place with a perfect record and nine points, securing a matchup against Cape Verde. This also determined the opponents for other favorites such as Spain and Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Mexico is already aware of the challenge that lies ahead.
The team coached by Javier Aguirre will face Ecuador on June 30 in Mexico City, in what is set to be one of the most exciting matches of this round given the strong form of both teams.
El Tri is coming off a perfect group stage and will look to keep the momentum going against a South American opponent that surprised everyone by qualifying in commanding fashion.
Brazil will also face a major test when it takes on Japan in Houston, while Germany will face Paraguay in Boston.
The Netherlands will play Morocco in Monterrey, and France will face Sweden at the New York/New Jersey stadium.

The United States will look to take advantage of home-field advantage when it hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara, while England will kick off its campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Atlanta.
Belgium will face a tough match against Senegal in Seattle, and Portugal will take on Croatia in Toronto.
The Spanish national team will face Austria on July 2 in Los Angeles, in a match that promises to be intense between two European teams hoping to advance.
That same day, Switzerland will face Algeria in Vancouver—another match that is generating a lot of excitement given the strong performances both teams have shown during the first round.
