On the day Lionel Messi scored twice to set a historic record as the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 18 goals, France’s Kylian Mbappé added two to his tally, tying Germany’s Miroslav Klose with 16.

Mbappé, who already has two braces in as many games, scored against Iraq yesterday in the 14th and 54th minutes of the Group I match on the second day of play, held in Philadelphia.

Argentina’s Messi, who will turn 39 on June 24, surpassed Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals yesterday.

Whose record of 16 goals was set on July 8, 2014, during Germany’s 1-7 rout of Brazil, the host nation of that World Cup, in Belo Horizonte.

Klose has now been tied by Mbappé, 27, who played his 100th game for Les Bleus yesterday.

Before the match, the Real Madrid player was tied with Germany’s Gerd Müller at 14 goals on the list of all-time leading scorers in all World Cups.

The goal he scored against Iraq in the 14th minute put him on the all-time list with 15.

Next to the Brazilian Ronaldo Luiz Nazário de Lima.

And in the match in which France was leading 2-0, the No. 10 left the Brazilian behind, tied Klose’s record, and is now just two goals behind Messi (Filed under: Kylian Mbappé closes in on Messi’s record).

French forward Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Iraq, said Monday that he doesn’t pay attention to what Argentine Lionel Messi does.

Just hours earlier, he had become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

“Leo always scores. He’s always done it—scoring. He always will.”

“If I focused on what Leo does, I’d have to work even harder,” Mbappé said in the mixed zone at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

“So no, I don’t pay any attention to what (Messi) does at all”:

“All I think about is helping my team,” added Mbappé, who made his 100th appearance for France in the match against Iraq.

Mbappé also spoke about his feelings following France’s first two victories, in which he scored two goals in each game.

“I feel great. Everyone knows that the World Cup is a major goal for any player,” said the forward (Filed under: Kylian Mbappé Eyes Messi’s Record).
