Madonna broke her silence on one of the most ambitious projects of recent years: the movie based on her life. In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, the so-called “Queen of Pop” explained the reasons behind the cancellation of the film she was developing with Universal Pictures—a production that promised to trace her story from her early years in Michigan to her rise as one of the most influential artists in the global music scene.
Although the project generated a great deal of excitement among her fans, it ultimately never made it to the filming stage due to a series of financial and creative differences between the singer and the film studio.
According to Madonna, one of the main reasons for the project’s failure was the budget allocated by Universal Pictures.
The actress explained that her life story required a large-scale production to faithfully portray the different stages of her career, which is why she considered the studio’s proposed budget insufficient.
For the artist, scaling back the scope of the project would have meant compromising the quality of a story that spans decades of work, international tours, artistic transformations, and personal moments that have shaped her career.
Faced with a lack of resources, Madonna even suggested some alternatives to reduce production costs.
Madonna and Her Biopic: The Proposal That Didn’t Win Over the Studio
In order to keep the project alive, the singer suggested moving part of the filming to Serbia, where production costs were considerably lower.
However, the proposal failed to win the trust of Universal’s executives.
According to the artist, some studio executives even questioned whether she would actually stay in that country for several months to direct the film.
Madonna said that this skepticism surprised her, as she believes her entire career demonstrates her commitment to the projects she takes on.

The film not only set out to tell Madonna’s story, but it was also a deeply personal project for her.
The singer served as director and co-writer of the screenplay, playing a role in virtually every creative decision.
In addition, actress Julia Garner was cast in the role after a lengthy audition process involving several candidates.
Garner’s selection was widely celebrated by the artist’s fans, who believed she possessed the qualities necessary to bring one of pop’s most important figures to life.
Netflix showed interest, but that didn’t work out either
After the film was put on hold, a new possibility emerged.
Netflix expressed interest in adapting the project into a series, an option that seemed to offer greater freedom to develop such an extensive story.
However, the initiative failed to make any progress either.

Among the main obstacles were the rights to the script, which remained with Universal Pictures, as well as the difficulty in finding a showrunner who could lead the project and meet Madonna’s expectations.
Although Shawn Levy’s involvement as an executive producer was announced in 2025, there have been no significant developments since then.
Madonna is focusing on music again
While the future of her biography remains on hold, Madonna has decided to refocus her energy on her music career.
She is currently working on a new album titled *Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II*, a project that marks her long-awaited creative reunion with producer Stuart Price, with whom she hasn’t collaborated in about 15 years.
In addition, she recently released the single “Love Sensation” and made a surprise guest appearance on the second season of the series *The Studio*, filmed in Venice.
Although she acknowledges that she would like to bring her story to the screen someday, Madonna said she will only move forward with the project if she finds a creative team willing to develop the production with the scope and level of quality she considers necessary to tell the story of a life marked by innovation, controversy, and international success.
