French forward Kylian Mbappé said Tuesday that he was “very happy” to have become, following his two goals in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the French national team and to have “written another chapter in France’s history.”

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I think I’ll have time to think about these kinds of things later on, when I stop playing,” said the captain of the French national team—which kicked off its World Cup campaign with a victory over Senegal and a two-goal performance by Mbappé—in the mixed zone.

Mbappé now has 58 goals for France in 99 games, surpassing Olivier Giroud, who scored a total of 57 in the 137 games he played for Les Bleus.

“I thought about my loved ones. They were all there: my family, my friends, the people closest to me.”

“When we play such important games, we know that our whole family is going to come to watch us. It’s for them that I score every time,” said the Real Madrid forward.

With his two goals, Mbappé reached 14 World Cup goals, surpassing Pelé’s 12 and the 13 scored by Leo Messi (who later reached 16) and Frenchman Just Fontaine.

He is now tied with Gerd Müller, one goal behind Brazilian Ronaldo Nazário’s 15.

And just two short of the 16 scored by Germany’s Miroslav Klose, the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, who now shares that title with Messi (Filed under: Kylian Mbappé Makes History with France).

“We have a lot of young players who are playing in their first World Cup, so I think there was also a bit of emotional tension.”

Mbappé added, referring to France’s debut, in which they defeated Senegal 3-1 after a very close first half.

“Winning this first game will give many of them some peace of mind,” added the captain of the French team.

Following its victory over Senegal at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, France will face Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday, June 22.

They will wrap up their Group I campaign on Friday, June 26, against Norway at the Boston venue (Filed under: Kylian Mbappé Makes History with France).
