Recordamos las veces que el Tri nos rompió el corazón para que en este Mundial 2026 entremos con el "ojo pelón". ¿Cuál te dolió más?

Let’s face it, let’s be honest: being a fan of the Mexican National Team is like living on a roller coaster of emotions, where most of the time the trolley gets stuck just before the descent. With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner and being local, hope is sky high, but the ghosts of the past are always there, lurking in the small area.

To warm up the engines, QuéOnnda decided to unearth those moments that still make anyone doubt divine justice in soccer. Get ready, take out your handkerchief and pray that this 2026 the story will be different. Here are the 5 painful moments of Mexico in the World Cups.

1. The “It wasn’t a penalty” (Brazil 2014).

We begin with the national trauma par excellence.

On June 29, 2014, Arjen Robben became the biggest villain in Mexico’s history after an Oscar-worthy “flight” inside the box.

The referee bought it, Holland scored and the dream of a fifth game vanished.

To this day, if you say “It wasn’t a penalty” in any corner of the country, someone will agree with you.

2. Maxi Rodriguez’s shoe kick (Germany 2006)

They had Argentina on the ropes.

Rafa Márquez had made them dream of an early goal, but fate (and Maxi Rodríguez’s chest) had other plans.

That volleyed goal from outside the box in extra time still hurts as if it were yesterday.

It was, perhaps, the World Cup where Mexico played best, but where soccer was cruelest.

3. The Penalty Curse (USA 1994)

Playing almost at home in the United States (as Mexico will do in 2026), El Tri reached the round of 16 against Bulgaria.

After a hard-fought draw, it came down to penalties.

The image of Alberto García-Aspe sending the ball into the clouds still haunts Mexicans.

It was the beginning of a streak of eliminations in the round of 16 that seems to have no end in sight.

4. The German miracle that woke up the Mexicans (Russia 2018)

Beating Germany (the defending champion) in the debut was the peak of happiness.

It seemed that this was the World Cup.

However, the euphoria took its toll on the Aztecs and they ended up suffering against Sweden and falling, once again, in the round of 16 against Brazil.

It was a reminder that in a World Cup, one match does not make the tournament.

5. The “Two to Zero” (Korea-Japan 2002)

If there’s one defeat that will make you proud, it’s this one.

Losing to the United States in a World Cup is the most bitter “ya merito” of all.

The Mexicans had a clear path to go far, but the northern rival gave them a lesson in effectiveness that they have yet to digest.
