Yuri tells Belinda and Danna, “You’ll never sing like me.”

The new production *Mentiras: All Stars* has become one of the biggest theatrical hits of the year. The show, starring Belinda, Danna Paola, and Mariana Treviño, has captivated audiences since its premiere at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, where it played to a full house and generated a huge buzz on social media.

However, the phenomenon also sparked a debate among different generations of performers. While thousands of viewers are celebrating the new versions of the 1980s’ greatest hits, Yuri sparked controversy after making comments that many users interpreted as criticism of the musical’s leading ladies. In contrast, Lupita D’Alessio decided to publicly express her admiration for Danna Paola’s work.

During one of her recent concerts, Yuri spoke to the audience about the success of *Mentiras: All Stars* and directly mentioned Danna Paola and Belinda, who are currently performing some of the most iconic songs from the ’80s.

“Look at what’s happening with this show *Mentiras*, starring Danna Paola, Belinda, and all these young women,” the singer said.

She went on to add that while younger artists perform those songs, the stars of the 1980s, in her view, are being downplayed. “They make fun of us 80s girls,” she told the audience.

Yuri acknowledged that the lead actresses do a good job on stage, though he concluded with a line that quickly went viral: “They do a nice job, but they’ll never sing like me.”

The remarks were met with applause from the audience at the concert, but on social media they sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the singer and others feeling the comparison was unnecessary.

Far from the controversy, the musical continues to enjoy great success. After selling out in Mexico City, the production has already confirmed new performances in various locations across the country.

The show will come to the Telmex Auditorium in Monterrey on October 2, then move on to Guadalajara on October 9, and return to the National Auditorium on November 8, where another large audience is expected.

The combination of a cast of renowned artists and a repertoire featuring classics from the 1980s has made this production one of the most talked-about theater projects of 2026.

While Yuri’s comments sparked debate, Lupita D’Alessio chose to highlight Danna Paola’s work in a video she posted on TikTok.

“I don’t usually get involved—I don’t like to stick my nose where it doesn’t belong—but this time I do want to,” he said before dedicating a message of appreciation to her.

The so-called “Sleeping Lioness” described Danna as “a tremendous singer” and praised various aspects of her performance on *Mentiras: All Stars*. Among these, she highlighted her phrasing, vocal nuances, and ability to hit both high notes and low registers.

To wrap up her message, Lupita was emphatic in describing the musical’s lead actress’s talent: “She’s a super-super singer.”

Thus, as the hit production continues to take stages by storm, the opinions of two leading figures in Mexican music have fueled a conversation about the legacy of ’80s songs and the new generations performing them today.
