{"id":80191,"date":"2025-09-19T14:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T18:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/new-york-politicians-arrested-defending-migrants\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T14:31:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T18:31:13","slug":"new-york-politicians-arrested-defending-migrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/en\/new-york-politicians-arrested-defending-migrants\/","title":{"rendered":"New York politicians arrested defending migrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than a dozen New York politicians were arrested Thursday in a protest inside and outside a federal building used by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a detention center, which they have denounced for its poor conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The building has in recent months been the scene of immigrant arrests by masked ICE agents, who then transfer them to an indoor detention center that is subject to a court-ordered enhancement.<\/p>\n<h2>Democratic politicians arrested<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80180\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80180\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/NY-2.jpg\" alt=\"ICE\" width=\"1200\" height=\"852\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Screenshot of AFN&#8217;s X-account.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the politicians arrested, all Democrats, are City Comptroller Brad Lander.<\/p>\n<p>Public Defender Jumaane Williams and State Legislators Julia Salazar and Gustavo Rivera.<\/p>\n<p>As well as local legislators Marcela Mitaynes and Jessica Gonz\u00e1lez Rojas, according to local media and social media posts.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that various politicians have organized protests in this building against the ICE detention and deportation policies of the Donald Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>They are then arrested for civil disobedience and subsequently released.<\/p>\n<h2>75 activists and politicians arrested in NY<\/h2>\n<p>According to the New York Immigration Coalition, law enforcement arrested a total of 75 people today, mostly activists.<\/p>\n<p>Including eleven politicians who staged a sit-in on the tenth floor of the building, where ICE holds immigrants and they demanded to monitor their conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani expressed solidarity with the cause in X.<\/p>\n<p>He denounced ICE&#8217;s &#8220;inhumane conditions&#8221; in the building, which his colleagues wanted to &#8220;inspect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Order to improve detention conditions<\/h2>\n<p>In August, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan prohibited ICE from holding people there in &#8220;unsanitary&#8221; conditions.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the government to comply with his order.<\/p>\n<p>It includes a veto on overcrowding and required access to mattresses, hygiene and contact with lawyers, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Lander, in a press conference after his release, said that law enforcement did not allow the politicians access to the facilities where the immigrants they detained are being held.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, they blocked the door with &#8220;tape and ropes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we were asked to leave, we said we would not leave until we saw the conditions in which our neighbors are being cruelly and illegally detained.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made it clear that we would not leave, and then they arrested us,&#8221; recounted Lander, according to the digital media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMNY<\/a>, as reported by EFE.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qu\u00e9Onnda.com.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than a dozen New York politicians were arrested Thursday in a protest inside and outside a federal building used by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a detention center, which they have denounced for its poor conditions.
