Category 4 Hurricane Erin will “dramatically” increase in size over the next few days as it passes between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda, forcing the evacuation of some tourist islands in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

The U.S. National Hurricane Center(NHC<\/a>) warned in its latest bulletin that Erin is 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of the Turks and Caicos Islands, located in the Caribbean, with maximum sustained winds of up to 220 kilometers per hour (140 miles per hour).<\/p>\n

It also warned that its expected trajectory – parallel to the U.S. east coast – veered slightly westward, approaching the U.S. coast.<\/p>\n

Strong winds, in addition to dangerous swells and “life-threatening” rip currents have prompted authorities to order the evacuation of the North Carolina resort islands of Ocracoke and Hatteras, home to about 5,000 people.<\/p>\n

Hurricane Erin is expected to pass southeast of the Bahamas this Monday and advance between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast by midweek, remaining a dangerous major hurricane.<\/p>\n

Hazardous sea conditions extend to much of the east coast of the United States, as well as the Bahamas, Bermuda and Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n

The NHC, based in Miami, also warned of heavy rains in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeast and central Bahamas, with accumulations of 50 to 100 millimeters (2 to 4 inches) and maximums of up to 150 millimeters (6 inches), which could generate flash flooding, urban flooding and landslides.<\/p>\n

Minor coastal flooding is also expected in storm surge areas, accompanied by large waves.<\/p>\n

NHC meteorologists detail that hurricane force winds extend up to 130 kilometers (80 miles) from its center, and tropical storm force winds reach up to 370 kilometers (230 miles).<\/p>\n

The size of Hurricane Erin will increase “dramatically” as it rises parallel to the U.S. coast, causing waves in excess of 50 feet high, the agency added.<\/p>\n

The system is currently moving northwestward at 17 kilometers per hour (10 miles), with a gradual turn to the north expected between today, Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Erin caused strong winds and rains in the Caribbean over the weekend, especially in Puerto Rico, although without causing serious impacts.<\/p>\n

It emerged as a tropical storm last Monday near Cape Verde, where it left seven dead, and became a hurricane on Friday after the formation in the Atlantic of storms Andrea, Barry, Chantal and Dexter.<\/p>\n

Chantal was the first to make landfall this year in the United States, where she left at least two dead in North Carolina in July.<\/p>\n

NOAA maintained its forecast for an “above normal” hurricane season, estimating 13 to 18 tropical storms, of which five to nine could become hurricanes.<\/p>\n
