This measure, approved in January by the state government, has been described by legal experts and human rights advocates as &#8220;a direct threat&#8221; against migrant communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7\">The law was pushed through in the midst of a toughening of immigration policy following Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the presidency, with the active support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. In parallel, the state has increased its cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(DHS<\/a>), building detention centers such as the controversial &#8220;Alligator Alcatraz&#8221;, and authorizing local police to participate in ICE raids against undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-8\">Death penalty is applied without unanimity<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59808\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59808\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/florida-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Florida\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Screenshot of the Digital Process X Account.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">As of 2023, Florida and Alabama are the only states where jury unanimity is not required to recommend capital punishment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">It is sufficient that 8 of the 12 members vote in favor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">And since January of this year, the law allows the death penalty to be imposed even without unanimous recommendation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">As well as in cases involving undocumented persons charged with aggravated felonies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">&#8220;It is blatantly unconstitutional,&#8221; warned attorney Maria DeLiberato, director of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-8\">&#8220;A mandatory death penalty cannot be applied, much less in a process that already excludes basic guarantees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Florida breaks execution record in 2025<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59810\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59810\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59810\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/florida-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Screenshot of the X Account of 100% News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-10\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">This Monday, July 15, Florida carried out its eighth execution of the year, surpassing its historical average and coming within one of breaking its own annual record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">The condemned was Michael B. Bell, who was sentenced for murder and executed by lethal injection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">In addition, the state already has a ninth execution scheduled for July 31, which would make it the territory with the most executions in a single year since 2018, when Texas reached 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-6\">Florida has the third highest number of executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, with a total of 113 deaths, behind only Texas (595) and Oklahoma (129).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">In the last three years, it has executed 14 people, and all indications are that the number will continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">Currently, 283 people are waiting on death row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">Although Florida has exonerated more wrongfully convicted inmates than any other state &#8211; 30 in all &#8211; the system remains one of the most aggressive in its application of capital punishment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-12\">Criticism from religious and civil sectors<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_59812\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59812\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-59812\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/florida-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"Florida\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59812\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Screenshot of Diario 1 X Account.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">The increase in executions and the application of this new law has generated strong criticism from religious leaders, legal organizations and immigrant advocates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">They accuse the state of using the death penalty as a political weapon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">The Archdiocese of Miami called the trend &#8220;corrosive&#8221; and called for a halt to the executions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\"><figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p style=\"color: #fd9737;\">It is blatantly unconstitutional<\/p><cite>Mar\u00eda DeLiberato<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">For his part, state Congressman Berny Jacques publicly endorsed the policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-13\">He linked it to the &#8220;renewed interest in law and order&#8221; following Trump&#8217;s victory in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-14\">For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qu\u00e9Onnda.com.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida has become the first state in the country to legally allow undocumented migrants to be sentenced to death, without the need for a unanimous jury, if they are found guilty of capital crimes such as first-degree murder or child rape.
