A large-scale immigration raid shook the Latino community in Southern California on July 10. Federal immigration agents, in coordination with the National Guard, raided the premises of Glass House Farms, one of the largest cannabis farms in the state. The result: arrests, injuries, protests and desperate families looking for answers.<\/p>\n

The raid began early, when dozens of agents in tactical gear blocked Laguna Road, on the outskirts of Camarillo. Simultaneous actions were also reported at the same company’s facilities in Carpinteria, in Santa Barbara County. Videos released by the 805 Immigrant Coalition showed armed agents displaying tape with “U.S. Border Patrol” legends and restricting passage.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, more than 100 people gathered outside the complex, many of them family members of farm workers.<\/p>\n

The tension escalated quickly, local media outlet VC Star<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

Witnesses reported that officers<\/a> fired rubber bullets and fired tear gas into the crowd, injuring several protesters.<\/p>\n

Oxnard and Ventura County emergency services declared the situation a “multiple casualty incident”.<\/p>\n

At least five people were transported to hospitals and several others received medical attention at the scene, county fire department spokesman Andrew Dowd confirmed.<\/p>\n

Among those who experienced the horror from the outside was Jessica Lopez, a U.S. citizen and wife of an undocumented worker.<\/p>\n

“He called me at 9:30 a.m. and told me he was hiding,” she told VCR Star. “He hasn’t done anything wrong. He’s just working to give us a better life.”<\/p>\n

Dalia Perez, 30, was also waiting for news. Her mother, who has lived in Oxnard for more than three decades, was detained.<\/p>\n

“I feel helpless. My mom is not a criminal,” she expressed in tears to the aforementioned media outlet.<\/p>\n

Although Glass House Farms confirmed that agents served search warrants, as of press time federal authorities had not reported what specific crimes they were investigating.<\/p>\n

Congresswoman Julia Brownley publicly denounced the lack of transparency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and called the operation “egregious and immoral.”<\/p>\n

“The Trump administration promised to curb farm raids, but today we saw the opposite. They are sowing fear in the community,” he said.<\/p>\n
