{"id":55535,"date":"2025-07-02T15:04:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T19:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/coalition-of-states-sues-government-for-sharing-medical-data-with-immigration\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T15:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T19:12:12","slug":"coalition-of-states-sues-government-for-sharing-medical-data-with-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/en\/coalition-of-states-sues-government-for-sharing-medical-data-with-immigration\/","title":{"rendered":"States Sue U.S. Government Over Medical Data Shared With ICE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ai-optimize-6 ai-optimize-introduction\">A coalition of 21 states, led by California, filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for sharing patient medical data with immigration agencies such as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-7\">The legal action was filed in the Northern District Court of California and alleges that the transfer of personal data of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.medicare.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medicaid<\/a> beneficiaries to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a direct violation of federal public health law.<\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-8\">What does Medicaid protect and why does it matter?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55523\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55523\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/HHS-2.jpg\" alt=\"HHS\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Medicaid, created in 1965, provides health insurance to low-income individuals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Including children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities and some categories of immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">By law, medical information collected must be kept confidential, and can only be shared in specific circumstances that promote public health, not immigration prosecution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">In January 2025, more than 78.4 million people were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP (the Children&#8217;s Insurance Program).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">Among them, more than two million immigrants in California through the state&#8217;s Medi-Cal program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-9\">The problem stems from new policies pushed by the Trump administration, which empowered HHS to transfer data to ICE without a warrant, allegedly to facilitate raids and mass deportations.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-10\">&#8220;A culture of fear&#8221;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55525\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55525\" src=\"https:\/\/nuevaonda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/HHS-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">California Attorney General <strong>Rob Bonta<\/strong> said the policy &#8220;upends decades of privacy protections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\">In addition, it generates a &#8220;culture of fear&#8221;
