More than 100 people were arrested in Nashville, Tennessee, during a series of immigration raids organized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)<\/a> in collaboration with the Tennessee State Highway Patrol. These raids, conducted last week, are part of an intensified strategy by former President Donald Trump to accelerate mass deportations during his political campaign.<\/p>\n

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), more than 500 traffic stops were conducted, in which the immigration status of drivers and passengers was verified. As a result, 126 people were detained, 95 of whom have criminal records for crimes such as drug possession and assault, and 31 re-entered the country illegally after having been deported. DHS made public the identities and photographs of five of the detainees, all with criminal records, which was interpreted by activists as an attempt to justify operations that, according to them, terrorize entire communities without distinction.<\/p>\n

The presence of ICE and state forces generated immediate alarm among Latino residents of Nashville, a city with a growing Hispanic community.<\/p>\n

The local organization La Brigada de Oro, linked to the city’s soccer team, canceled its match on Saturday.<\/p>\n

This is in solidarity with the affected families.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mayor Freddie O’Connell, a Democrat, rejected the operations, stating that his administration was not informed in advance or given authorization.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, he signed an executive order to have all resident interactions with federal immigration authorities documented.<\/p>\n

“We do not solicit this security approach, nor do we endorse it,” he stated publicly.<\/p>\n

Human rights organizations, such as the ACLU and Mijente, have denounced that the proceedings violate principles of due process.<\/p>\n

This is by detaining people without warrants and without immediate legal representation.<\/p>\n
