The US government officially announced the creation of a second restricted military zone on the border with Mexico, as part of its stricter immigration policy under the current administration of Donald Trump. The measure was confirmed by the US Northern Command, which detailed that the new strip covers more than 100 kilometers and will be under the control of Fort Bliss<\/a>, one of the largest military bases in the country, located on the outskirts of El Paso, Texas.<\/p>\n

This expansion is intended to strengthen border security and prevent irregular crossings, according to the Pentagon. The new perimeter is in addition to the existing “Roosevelt Reserve”, a 20-meter wide zone that runs parallel to much of the border line from New Mexico to California.<\/p>\n

Since April, Trump has authorized the Army to take control of federal land on the southern border.<\/p>\n

The executive order requires the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Interior and Agriculture to assist with the transfer of public lands to the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

This expansion aims to strengthen border security<\/p>QueOnnda.com<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n

As a result of this expansion, the first arrests have already been made.<\/p>\n

This week, 28 migrants were formally charged for entering this area under military jurisdiction, a more serious federal offense than the usual illegal border crossing, which is usually treated as a civil misdemeanor.<\/p>\n

According to recent data from the Department of Homeland Security, apprehensions at the southern border have decreased dramatically.<\/p>\n

This with fewer than 30,000 arrests in February 2025, in contrast to the more than 124,000 reported in December 2024, when Joe Biden was still in office.<\/p>\n

In addition to territorial control, the Trump administration has intensified the use of military assets, including flights with deported migrants.<\/p>\n

As in the case of Venezuelan citizens recently transferred to the Guantanamo naval base in Cuba.<\/p>\n

These new border policies directly impact thousands of Latino families.<\/p>\n

Many of them have relatives or acquaintances trying to regularize their situation or awaiting asylum proceedings.<\/p>\n
